Who is building this.

The Place & Page is being built by Damion Topping.

He came to bookselling by an indirect route. West Point, then the Army as an attack-helicopter pilot, then an MBA and more than twenty years leading analytics and strategy organizations — most recently in Tucson. Work that rewarded asking what the evidence actually said rather than what everyone assumed.

He has envisioned opening a bookstore for nearly thirty years. This is not a late-career discovery. It is a long-deferred one. Service was the point of the military and harder to locate in the corporate world. What changed was not the arc but the timing — and the chance to build something that serves the place he lives.

He came to Tucson for work, fell in love with the city, and decided to stay and build something here. Tucson was not selected as a market. It was chosen as home.

A bookstore is one of the few places left where people gather without being required to buy anything, where strangers browse the same shelves for different reasons, and where the entire point is encountering something you may not have known you were looking for.

That is worth building carefully, and worth building here.

Understanding a thing before acting on it is the discipline he brought with him. It applied to the trade. It applies to Tucson. What is Tucson's reading culture, what sustains it, and what could a bookstore here contribute? The Tucson State of Reading — an annual public measurement of reading life in Pima County — began with those questions. It was produced before there was a shelf to stock or a door to open.
